Magnetic tapes (also known as magnetic strips or marking tapes) offer you a versatile solution for labelling storage shelves, metal cabinets and drawers, etc. The coloured magnetic tapes also help you with the planning and visualisation of tasks and projects on a whiteboard and magnetic paint. Tip: If you would like to attach non-magnetic objects to ferromagnetic surfaces, then magnetic adhesive tape is the right choice for you. Key features of magnetic tape

Our online shop offers strontium ferrite magnetic tape in 1-metre rolls, available in a range of colours and six different widths. The coloured side of the magnetic tape is made of PVC, while the reverse side is magnetic. Magnetic tapes are suitable for a variety of applications since they can be cut to the desired length. They are also reusable, can be written and printed on (digital or screen printing) and can be removed without leaving any residue. How to choose the correct size for your magnetic tape

Buying the right width: Is a wider magnetic tape stronger?

Yes, a wide magnetic tape has a stronger adhesive force than narrower magnetic tapes. All tapes you can purchase from the supermagnete assortment have an adhesive force of 80 g/cm². Consequently, the size of the contact area on the ferromagnetic surface varies depending on the width of the tape. As a result, wider magnetic tapes offer a higher adhesive force under ideal conditions. These conditions include a clean surface, full contact, and ferromagnetic material of sufficient thickness.

A calculation example, assuming the magnetic tape is always 10 cm long:

A narrow magnetic tape is usually sufficient for labelling shelves or metal cabinets. If you would like to use it to attach photos or paper to the wall, we recommend using a larger piece of magnetic tape.

Frequently asked questions about magnetic tape

Can I combine magnetic tapes with each other?

Yes, thanks to their striped magnetisation, you can combine two pieces of magnetic tape. To ensure the tapes lie flush against each other, you need to rotate one of the tapes by 180 degrees. This is particularly useful for magnetic closures on bags. You do not need two different tapes with different polarities. You can find detailed information on our FAQ page on combining.

Why doesn’t my magnetic tape hold?

If the magnetic tape fails to adhere, the issue usually lies with the surface to which you are trying to attach it. Possible reasons include:

The chosen surface is not made of ferromagnetic material, preventing the magnet from adhering to it.
The magnetic tape is not in full contact with the ferromagnetic surface, resulting in a loss of adhesive force. This occurs when the surface is rough, textured, uneven or curved.
The ferromagnetic surface is too thin. Magnetic tape can only achieve its full adhesive force if the ferromagnetic surface is sufficiently thick.
If coatings, paint, sheeting, dirt, dust, etc. cause even a small gap between the ferromagnetic material and the magnetic tape, the adhesive force will be reduced and the magnetic tape adheres less effectively. This is also the reason why magnetic tapes are unsuitable for use on magnetic glass boards.

Damage such as scratches, rips or creases can also compromise the adhesive force of the magnetic tape. Likewise, exposure to another, stronger magnetic field, e.g. that of a neodymium magnet, can reduce the adhesive force of magnetic tape.

Typical applications for magnetic tapes

Magnetic tapes are versatile accessories for everyday use. They are suitable for any situation where you need a flexible solution for labelling or identifying ferromagnetic surfaces, or for attaching items to them. Magnetic tapes are used, among other things, in display and exhibition stand construction, for craft projects, in schools, warehouses, workshops and offices:

Utilise magnetic tape to label shelves, metal cupboards and workshop trolleys with flexibility: Cut the magnetic tapes to the desired length and label steel shelves and metal cabinets in the office, the warehouse or, for example, in your pantry at home. You can also use them to label metal workshop trolleys. Simply snip off a suitably long piece of magnetic tape and attach it to the ferromagnetic surface of the shelf. If storage locations change, the magnetic tape label can be quickly swapped out without leaving any residue. Magnetic tape as organisation tool on whiteboards: Whether you want to allocate tasks, schedule appointments or start a brainstorming session, the whiteboard meets your needs. Assign specific colours to your staff and colleagues with coloured magnetic tapes and position them variably in the right place on the board. This allows you to create a well-defined planning board, a Kanban board or a practical schedule outlining tasks and responsibilities.

Use coloured magnetic tape for identification: The bright colours of the magnetic tapes in our assortment are highly conspicuous. This facilitates the visual marking of storage locations or production areas. The colours of the magnetic tapes are visible from a distance, providing visual cues regarding the storage location. In addition to that, the magnetic strips can also be labelled.

Quickly attach photos and notes quickly with magnetic tape: If you have previously attached photos and postcards with standard adhesive tape, then magnetic tape offers a practical alternative. Although magnetic tape is primarily intended for labelling, you can also use it to hang lightweight photos, postcards and notes. The advantage: it is easy to remove without leaving any unsightly adhesive residue.
Cut the magnetic tape to the desired length and apply it along the edges of the picture or piece of paper. Part of the tape must rest on the intended mounting surface. Sew magnetic tape onto bags: If you would like to sew your own bag or replace an existing bag closure, use coloured magnetic tape. Sewing on magnetic strips allows the closure to be opened quickly, while the attraction of the magnets ensures it snaps shut again almost on its own.
Compared to neodymium magnets, our magnetic tapes have a lower adhesive force. Therefore, if you prefer to sew the magnets into the fabric so they remain hidden from sight, we recommend our sew-in neodymium magnets.
